Windows Update is the official software that handles Windows OS updates. Microsoft includes the software in all official versions of Windows. Although the program is simple, it plays a vital role in keeping computers updated and protected. Everything from security patches to feature updates are included here. Users can set the software to provide automatic updates, or they can opt for a manual update schedule.

Over a billion PCs feature Windows Update, and the software comes preloaded. Therefore, users don't need to worry about a manual installation. The software runs automatically in the background and fetches updates as they become available. Automatic updates occur during specified times and outside of a user's regular day. Otherwise, an update can be paused or delayed on a manual basis in most cases.

Microsoft tends to push updates and patches every couple weeks. Most of these updates come with small security patches and bug fixes. Throughout the year, the company releases feature updates that include operating system changes and new features. Perhaps the biggest complaint about Windows Update is that updates cannot be delayed forever. Windows Update often pushes updates after a few delays, no matter what users desire.

As previously mentioned, Windows Update mostly runs in the background without being intrusive. Some users criticize the software for eventually forcing most updates. It doesn't help that some of Microsoft's big feature updates cause bugs and other issues. Either way, most users won't deal with Windows Update too often, or they won't notice the software running its course.
